It Begins

Years of planning, research, applying, and fundraising have all funneled into one day it seems — September 24th, the day we flew away.

Katie and I quit our jobs, sold or stored all of our stuff, emptied our house in South Carolina (which is still for sale), said goodbye to family and friends, and skipped the country.

When we arrived in London, we took the train to Charlbury, just outside of Oxford to stay in a little village called Fulbrook near Burford. Our flat in Oxford wasn’t available for a week, so we found a beautiful cottage that was significantly cheaper than staying in the city. We commuted to Oxford by bus (nearly 2 hrs.) on certain days to do business (set up bank accounts, get phones, register at my college, etc.).

It seems unreal, but we’ve been in our incredibly cozy flat in Oxford for nearly two weeks. Since then, I’ve had nought week — the week before term, welcome dinners, inductions of all sorts, auditions, tours of special collections and rare books, and the first Early Modern Graduate Seminar. Katie and I auditioned for St. John’s College Choir, and we’ve been singing with them for the last week.

We’ve managed to move from survival mode in our flat to a more settled position. There was a famine of hangers in Oxford for a while. But we’ve managed to pull through, as we found two packs left at Argos.

Katie is all over the city, speaking with commercial letting agents and searching for studio and retail space for Illyria Pottery. Hopefully, she’ll be settled soon. She’s dying to get started.

Yesterday, I met my supervisor, Emma Smith, for the first time. On top of being a fantastic Shakespearean scholar, she’s incredibly kind and gracious. I have no doubt that we’ll get along very well.

Tomorrow is matriculation, the ceremony where I’ll be officially admitted into the University of Oxford. I’ll wear sub fusc and my academic gown and have a good deal of Latin recited to me.
